The major resort on the island of Lanzarote, one of Puerto del Carmen's main features is its spectacular two-mile (3km) golden beach, which is backed by a main road, The Strip, where a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants of all types can be found.

For those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main resort, the Old Town retains soem of its old world charm.

There is plenty of shopping to be found in Puerto del Carmen although most of the traditional tourist tat dominates most of the resort. The Sunday Market in nearby Costa Teguise is worth a visit and expect to pay about 1 euros each way by taxi (agree a price before you set off).

With 100s of restaurants to choose from, you won't be short of choice for somewhere to enjoy a light lunch or evening meal. A wide variety of cuisine ranging from Chinese, Indian and English right through to excellent Spanish dishes. Try Lani's - this popular grill has restaurants across the island and serves up good quality food at affordable prices.

Many busy bars and nightclubs provide attractions for night owls and can be great fun.

Remember alcohol and sun often don't mix well so bear this mind before drinking to excess.

All sorts of watersports can be organised at the beach including banana boat rides, jet skiing and sailing.

Windsurfing is particularly good due to the strong regular winds.

Deep-sea fishing is also excellent and can be arranged through a couple of operators.

Scuba diving schools take trips to local wrecks as well as offering lessons.

As with many resorts in the Canary Islands, Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote has more than its fair share of electrical shops which at first glance throw up some fantastic bargains. A word of warning, whilst many people do find great bargains, others fall victim to scams. Make sure to check that the item you have paid for is in the box you take away and whenever possible test before you purchase.
