The seafront at Playa de Blanca
PLAYA DE BLANCA

Down in the south of the island, about forty minutes drive from the airport, is the delightful and upmarket resort of Playa de Blanca (Playa Blanca).

With the added attraction of a direct ferry link to Fuerteventura, this resort is very popular as is the perfect place to spend a relaxing week or two.

With very few lively bars or nightclubs, Playa Blanca tends to attract more couples than families and the walkway stretching along the coast from the town centre out to the lighthouse is particularly relaxing.

The town centre itself is a mixture of electrical shops, perfume stores, tourist products and high quality restaurants.

With the catch for the mornings fishing being sorted on the rocks in front of you, there is never any doubt that what you are being served is as fresh as they say it is.

Alternatively, have a relaxing drink watching the world go by.

The lighthouse just outisde Playa de Blanca

Just outside Playa Blanca is the lighthouse which at first glance appears slightly run down. Don't be put off by the beer bottles that can be found here, during the day it's a great place to sit on the rocks and watch some pretty impressive breakers coming in to shore. It can be walked from the town, but we'd advise driving - it's far easier!!

During the past few years, the beach at Playa Blanca suffered from the effects of a large storm that hit the island in Winter 2006. Despite the best efforts of the local authorities, it's never really got back to how it was, and in many places, rocks that were previously covered by golden sands are now prominent.

However, a short drive away in Papagayo, are the best islands in the island if not the whole Canaries. Hire a car and explore the natural surroundings, you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

The resort of Playa Blanca has expanded rapidly in recent years with more and more accommodation including apartments and villa's being built. However, nowhere can this recent progression be seen more than at Playa Blanca harbour. Once a small scale place with few boats, the harbour is now an area of the town in its own right. Large yachts and cafe's sit side by side and it's well worth a visit for a leisurly afternoon or a relaxing evening.
