Matagorda in Lanzarote
MATAGORDA IN LANZAROTE

Just over a mile from Puerto del Carmen, Matagorda and its sister resort of Los Pocillos are a complete contrast to the hustle and bustle of the main resort.

In this former fishing village, you'll find quiet bars perfect for relaxing in, or a traditional restauarnt serving the local 'catch of the day'.

However, if you want the best of both worlds, Matagorda in Lanzarote is linked by a long promenade walkway so you can dip in and out whenever you choose.

With a gently sloping beach of fine, dark sand, particularly popular for windsurfing, this small resort is understandably popular with watersports enthusiasts who visit here all year round to play in the warm clear waters.

Most of the restaurants in Matagorda are situated in the centre and visitors to this lovely resort have a great choice of a wide variety of cuisine.

Once you've finished your meal, spend a couple of hours in one of the many small bars dotted around the resort.

Although it is not lacking in waterfront pubs and bars, most offering some lively evening entertainment, nightlife in general in Matagorda is rather low key.

Younger visitors looking for a more vibrant night out opt to travel a short distance to the rollicking clubs and bars of 'The Strip' in neighbouring Puerto del Carmen.

A wide variety of watersports can be enjoyed along the beach, especially windsurfing for which the area is a famed spot.

Alternatives range from banana boat rides and jet skiing to parasailing, scuba diving and deep sea fishing. Land sports facilities in the vicinity include tennis, squash, golf and horse riding.

There are also several excursions on offer such as boat trips or visits to the dramatic Timanfaya National Park.

As with many resorts in the Canary Islands, Matagorda in Lanzarote has more than its fair share of electrical shops which at first glance throw up some fantastic bargains. A word of warning, whilst many people do find great bargains, others fall victim to scams. Make sure to check that the item you have paid for is in the box you take away and whenever possible test before you purchase.
